Foreign Media: A team from the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology & Engineering has developed a Hall effect magnetic sensor whose chip size is as tiny as a dust particle, yet capable of detecting the faint magnetic anomalies of a steel-hulled submarine located 500 meters deep.
The achievement was published on July 17 in Physical Review Letters, overcoming the long-standing trade-off between sensitivity and noise in traditional magnetic sensors—historically, reducing size and enhancing sensitivity would inevitably lead to a sharp increase in noise. However, this new technology generates weak voltage signals without increasing noise output.
This sensor is low-cost and fast-responsive, already widely used in smartwatches, smartphones, and other devices; in the future, it may enable ordinary wearable equipment to achieve long-distance submarine detection capabilities.
