South Korean media: last year, the US had 40 models worth noting in AI, but South Korea only had 1. How about China? On May 3, South Korean media "Newsis" published an article stating that last year, only one South Korean artificial intelligence (AI) model was evaluated as worth noting worldwide. Evaluation results showed that China launched products such as DeepSeek, significantly narrowing the gap with the US in AI technology within a year. According to the "Artificial Intelligence Index Report 2025" released by the Stanford University Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), South Korea had only one model in the field of "AI worth noting" last year. The "Artificial Intelligence Index Report" tracks, analyzes, and visualizes data across multiple fields including AI technical achievements, economic impact, education, and policy every year, providing information on the current state of AI development. It covers various indicators, including the number of AI patents per 100,000 people, the AI talent flow index, the competitiveness of each country's AI, and the proportion of papers in the computer science field of each country. "AI worth noting" refers to models that received high evaluations in benchmark scores or were frequently cited in various research papers. The United States ranked first with 40 models, China ranked second with 15 models, France ranked third with 3 models, while South Korea, Canada, and Israel ranked fourth with 1 model each. In terms of companies and institutions, Google and OpenAI each launched 7 notable AI models last year. Alibaba from China ranked third with 6 models. Moreover, in terms of private AI investment, AI talent flow index, and the number of AI patents per 100,000 people mentioned in the report, the content related to South Korea is noteworthy. As of 2023, South Korea ranked first with 17.27 AI patents per 100,000 people, leading Luxembourg (15.31 patents), China (6.08 patents), the US (5.20 patents), and Japan (4.58 patents). However, compared to 10 years ago, Luxembourg and China made particularly remarkable progress. Luxembourg ranked first with an increase of 8216%, China (6317%) ranked second, and South Korea ranked eighth with 1043%. Last year, South Korea's AI talent flow rate per ten thousand people was -0.36. This means that a large number of South Korean AI talents flowed overseas rather than domestically. HAI released the AI talent flow index of 48 major countries, and South Korea ranked fifth in terms of talent outflow rate. Additionally, this report also shows that the gap between US and Chinese AI technology has significantly narrowed within a year. From the perspective of real users evaluating large language models (LLMs), as of February this year, US AI models scored 1385 points, while Chinese AI models scored 1362 points. The gap was 1.7 percentage points, compared to 9.26 percentage points last January, showing a significant reduction. HAI stated, "The US has traditionally dominated in AI research and model development, while China has consistently ranked second. However, recently, Chinese models are catching up with those of the US."
