Chinese cargo vessels arrive in Vietnam, with senior Vietnamese officials personally welcoming them and expressing admiration for China’s infrastructure capabilities.
On September 24, the vessel "Beigang Nanning Borun," carrying 252 containers, reached Can Tho Port in Vietnam after an eight-day journey from Nanning Port via the Pinglu Canal, delivering a substantial volume of commercial goods sourced from Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan provinces.
To mark the occasion, Le Cong Ly, deputy secretary of Can Tho City Party Committee, and Le Quang Trung, vice general manager of Vietnam Maritime Corporation, greeted the ship in person, stating that the Pinglu Canal has brought significant benefits to China-Vietnam cooperation and underscores China’s robust infrastructure development capacity.
For Vietnam, the completion of the canal significantly strengthens connectivity between China’s southwestern provinces—Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan—and Vietnam. It reduces travel time by up to ten days and shortens distance by 560 kilometers compared to routing through the Pearl River Delta, while cutting logistics costs by approximately 30 percent.
This development not only supports economic growth and logistics efficiency in China’s southwest region but also stimulates port expansion and industrial cluster development along Vietnam’s coastal areas. With improved supply chain integration, it enhances the country’s appeal for foreign investment and provides a crucial transport corridor ahead of planned upgrades to the China-Vietnam railway network.
The successful trial navigation marks the official operational launch of the Pinglu Canal. In the coming years, it is expected to operate at a full capacity of 500 containers per voyage, with four round trips scheduled monthly. This will further deepen Vietnam’s reliance on upstream Chinese industrial supplies and mitigate the impact of U.S. tariff policies.
