Tokyo Gang Involved in 400 Million Yen Heist, 7 Arrested
According to Japanese media TBS News on March 14: Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department announced that it has arrested seven gang members who robbed about 400 million yen in cash on the street in Ueno in January.
The seven men include a 21-year-old organization official of the designated violent group, the sixth-generation Yamaguchi-gumi and the fourth-generation Hongdō-kai; a 27-year-old organization official of the Sogo-kai; and a 48-year-old organization official of the Kidō-kai.
At around 9:30 p.m. on January 29, the seven people conspired to rob three handbags containing approximately 423 million yen (about 18.6 million RMB) in cash on the street in Higashi-Ueno, Taitō-ku, and are suspected of spraying tear gas at one 43-year-old man.
Through investigation of surveillance cameras, it is believed that two gang officials from the Yamaguchi-gumi and Hongdō-kai organizations were regarded as "organizers," while another three were officials of the Sogo-kai gang responsible for stealing the cash, and the other two were officials of the Kidō-kai gang responsible for "arranging vehicles for the crime."
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, three Sogo-kai gang members met with two "organizers" from the Yamaguchi-gumi and Hongdō-kai about an hour before the incident at a park near the Tōbu-Takasako Station in Itabashi Ward, and then drove to the scene of the incident in Ueno.
The three "executors" attacked seven men and women, including a Japanese person operating a foreign currency exchange, stole the handbags containing cash, sprayed tear gas on a 43-year-old man, and then fled by car.
Afterwards, they abandoned the car and took another vehicle belonging to gang members, driving to Chiba Prefecture's Ichikawa City to exit the highway, and then transferred to Ibaraki Prefecture's Koga City and Tochigi Prefecture's Kobayashi City. On the next day, the 30th, they entered Saitama Prefecture's Kawagoe City and continued to flee. The escape vehicle has not yet been found.
Meanwhile, about two and a half hours after the Ueno robbery, there was an attempted robbery of 190 million yen (about 8.2 million RMB) at the Haneda Airport parking lot, and the perpetrators are still at large.
The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating how these seven people obtained information related to the cash transportation, and is also investigating the connection between the Ueno robbery and the attempted robbery at Haneda Airport.
