Survey: 41% of Germans Believe Replacing Merz Would Help the CDU/CSU Alliance
A survey by Forsa indicates that 53% of respondents believe replacing the chancellor would not help consolidate the alliance’s position, while 41% think that Friedrich Merz stepping down as chancellor could improve the CDU/CSU’s situation.
There is also division among the party’s supporters: 42% of CDU/CSU voters believe that replacing the chancellor would give the alliance a better chance to regain support. According to a recent poll by Insa, the current support rate for the CDU/CSU stands at only 22%, significantly trailing behind the Alternative for Germany (AfD), which currently enjoys a support rate of 29%.
Various rumors about leadership changes have intensified discussions about replacing Merz. Hendrik Wüst, the Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, is seen as a potential successor, but sources close to the chancellor describe such speculation as unrealistic.
The CDU leadership has publicly expressed strong support for Merz. CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann dismissed talk of replacing the chancellor as baseless nonsense.
