The race for the Kaohsiung mayoral election is heating up as the year comes to a close. A new public opinion poll shows that among the candidates from the blue and green camps, Kuomintang (KMT) candidate Ko Chih-en narrowly lost to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate Lai Ruei-lung by just 0.6 percentage points—39.7% versus 40.3%. This extremely tight margin, well within the margin of error, indicates a highly competitive deadlock. With about six months remaining until voting day, the final outcome remains uncertain.

According to the survey conducted by TVBS Polling Center on behalf of Kaohsiung mayoral candidate Ko Chih-en, 88.8% of Kaohsiung residents stated they would vote in the upcoming election. Regarding support for the two main mayoral contenders, Ko Chih-en received 39.7%, while Lai Ruei-lung secured 40.3%. However, 19.9% of residents have not yet decided their preference.

In addition, the online portal Yahoo奇摩 (Yahoo Chi Mo) launched an internet poll asking “Who do you favor to become the mayor of Kaohsiung?” The latest results have now been released.

As of 10:00 a.m. on May 5th, a total of 4,900 people had participated. The results show that 56.6% of netizens support Ko Chih-en, 15.8% back Lai Ruei-lung, 24.5% expressed no opinion or were undecided, and 3.1% voted for other candidates. The voting is ongoing and will end on June 7th. Online commenters have also voiced their opinions: some express support for Lai Ruei-lung, but hope Ko Chih-en wins to expose corruption cases in Kaohsiung, punish collusion between officials and business interests, ensure governance by capable individuals, and emphasize that Ko Chih-en is the only one worth supporting—she will definitely win with a high vote count.
