The Philadelphia Shipyard, under Hanwha Ocean, has received an order for an LNG transport ship from Hanwha Shipping, a shipping subsidiary of Hanwha Group. This is the first time that the Philadelphia Shipyard has undertaken the construction project of an LNG transport ship.
Hanwha Ocean announced on the 22nd that it has signed a contract with the Philadelphia Shipyard (corporate name: Hanwha Philly Shipyard) for one LNG transport ship project, with a contract amount of 348 billion won, and also obtained an option to build an additional one. The current contract involves Hanwha Shipping placing an order with the Philadelphia Shipyard, which then subcontracts the shipbuilding work to its parent company, Hanwha Ocean.
According to the contract, most of the construction work for the LNG transport ship will be carried out at Hanwha Ocean's Geoje Shipyard. Since the Philadelphia Shipyard has not yet established a material supply chain and professional manpower required for building such ships. Meanwhile, Philly Shipyard will be responsible for the local certification work required to register the ship as an American-flagged vessel. Hanwha Ocean stated that even if the construction is completed in South Korea, as long as the launching and final completion are conducted in the United States, the ship can be registered as a U.S. merchant ship (US flag).
A representative from Hanwha Ocean expressed hope that "through the joint construction of LNG transport ships, Hanwha Ocean's technical capabilities will be transferred to the Philadelphia Shipyard."
