Hungarian Prime Minister: Hungary is a sovereign country that can make independent decisions

Sputnik Budapest, September 26 - Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán commented on US President Trump's statement that he could persuade Hungary to abandon Russian oil, stating that Hungary is a sovereign country capable of making independent decisions.

Trump stated on September 23 during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly that he hoped Hungary would stop purchasing Russian oil. Trump said he believed Orbán would agree.

Orbán said in a program on the Kossuth Radio Station in Hungary: "I understand that the US is a major power while Hungary is a smaller country. But there is one thing we have in common: both countries are sovereign. We don't need to accept each other's positions. Like Hungary, the US also has its own positions and interests. Our common point is that we clearly express and put forward these positions. If our two countries have good relations, if we are friends, then we will listen to each other, and then do what we want to do individually."

Moscow has repeatedly stated that the West's refusal to purchase energy from Russia is a serious mistake, which will lead it into a new and greater dependence determined by higher prices. Moscow stated that those who refuse will still buy Russian oil and gas at high prices through intermediaries and continue to purchase them.
