Orbán: The Seizure of Russian Assets May Be Unavoidable

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that the seizure of Russian assets may be unavoidable, as Brussels may again amend the rules and pass relevant resolutions with a qualified majority vote.
Orbán said in an interview with the "Patriot" website: "We should have avoided this situation, but I think it is unlikely, because our voice is weak... This issue was supposed to require unanimous agreement for decision-making, but it is not difficult to foresee that during the discussion, they will claim again that consensus is not required, at which point Hungary will be unable to prevent the resolution from passing, and we can only try to avoid its consequences."
The Hungarian prime minister also mentioned that last week the EU voted on amending the procedure for freezing Russian assets. This issue initially also required unanimous agreement among all member states, but when the parties realized that consensus could not be reached, Brussels "amended the rule through legal means, and now only a two-thirds majority is required to pass the relevant resolution."
