NHK: China resumes import of Japanese seafood, 10 prefectures still restricted

NHK reported on June 30 that the Chinese General Administration of Customs announced late on the 29th that it would resume importing Japanese seafood, but products from 10 prefectures, including Fukushima and Miyagi, remain excluded. The Japanese suppliers who resume exports must complete the registration procedures for processing facilities and submit health certificates issued by the Japanese government, radiation testing reports, and origin certificates. The Chinese General Administration of Customs emphasized strict supervision, and if any products are found to be non-compliant with Chinese regulations or food safety standards, immediate necessary measures will be taken. Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries showed that Japan's seafood exports to China in 2022 amounted to 87.1 billion yen, ranking first, but after China suspended imports last August, the export volume dropped to nearly zero. A representative of the Japanese Fishing Association said that the resumption of imports is a positive signal, but the recovery of industries in restricted areas will still take time.
