Gambling on Failure Despite Knowing the Odds? Musk Bets $366 Million on Republican Midterm Elections
As of Monday local time, Elon Musk has committed $366 million in support of Republican candidates ahead of the midterm elections.
Beyond the staggering total, Musk is likely the largest individual donor in a single contribution. U.S. media reports indicate he has channeled additional funds through anonymous political groups—contributions not officially attributed to him. This suggests his actual financial commitment may exceed $366 million.
In terms of political investment, Musk’s track record has been notably successful. During the 2024 U.S. presidential election, he poured significant resources into securing Donald Trump’s return to the White House, and received substantial returns: Trump appointed him to an informal advisory role, and several legislative measures favorable to his companies were advanced. The deal proved profitable.
Yet the outcome of the midterms remains uncertain. Polling data and prediction markets both suggest Democrats are poised to regain control of both chambers of Congress—a development that would render Musk’s investment largely ineffective.
Currently, Democrats trail Republicans by four seats in the House of Representatives and by eight in the Senate. However, multiple indicators point to a strong Democratic surge in the House, where they are expected to secure majority control.
In the Senate, Democrats need to flip just four Republican seats to tie the Republicans in total numbers. With two independent senators who typically align with Democratic positions, a Democratic takeover of the chamber becomes feasible.
Notably, in Texas—a traditionally “deep red” state—Democratic Senate candidates now lead in polls. This shift stems from voter dissatisfaction with persistently high fuel prices.
This dynamic also helps explain why Trump has threatened to cut off military aid and delay transition efforts unless Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy halts attacks on Russian oil refineries. In Republican strongholds, gasoline prices remain one of the most influential factors in electoral outcomes.
