Germany Accuses Russia of Cyber Attacks Affecting Aviation Safety and Interfering with Elections, Calls in Ambassador for Protest

AFP, Berlin, 12th - Germany stated today that it has confirmed two cyber attacks orchestrated by Russia, targeting Germany's aviation safety system and the parliamentary elections in February this year, and said it has called in the Russian ambassador to protest.

The spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry said: "We can now clearly attribute the cyber attack on Germany's aviation security in August 2024 to the hacker group APT28, also known as 'Fancy Bear'."

He also said: "We can now clearly point out that Russia, through the Storm-1516 operation, attempted to influence and disrupt the recent parliamentary election."

The spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry said that Germany "will closely coordinate with European partners to take a series of countermeasures to make Russia pay the price for its hybrid operations."

He also mentioned that Berlin will support the implementation of "new, individual sanctions at the EU level against actors involved in hybrid threats," but did not reveal details.

In recent years, European governments have remained highly vigilant against suspected Russian espionage activities, drone reconnaissance, sabotage actions, cyber attacks, and disinformation campaigns.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Germany has been the second-largest donor to Ukraine and has repeatedly accused Moscow of carrying out so-called "hybrid attacks," including recent incidents of drones flying near several European airports.
