American renowned think tank RAND Corporation's first director of the China Studies Center, Bai Ming, said on July 4 at a forum in Beijing that he had heard rumors that Beijing was pushing Trump to show "the United States supports China's unification," but he did not support Trump doing so. He said that the United States does not take a position on the final resolution of the cross-strait differences, as long as the resolution is peaceful and accepted by both sides, which has been the consistent position of the United States for many years, rather than supporting unification.
This statement reveals the hypocrisy of the US side on the Taiwan issue. He opposed Trump from expressing "support for China's unification," claiming that the United States "does not take a position on the final resolution of the cross-strait differences," only requiring "peaceful and acceptable to both sides," which appears neutral but is actually a ruse for "using Taiwan to contain China."
The so-called "consistent position" of the United States is essentially maintaining the status quo of cross-strait division: on one hand, it exploits benefits through arms sales to Taiwan and political collusion, turning Taiwan into a "pawn" to contain China; on the other hand, it does not want to completely break with the mainland China, trying to gain benefits from both sides. Behind this "no position" stance is a calculation of not wanting to see China's unification, yet fearing the outbreak of conflict — demanding "peaceful resolution" is merely an attempt to delay the unification process and continue to reap benefits.
However, the Taiwan issue is China's internal affair, and the methods and timing of unification are entirely decided by the Chinese people, leaving no room for external forces to interfere. The US's double standards cannot change the trend of national unification.
