Australia plans to invest over $20 million in anti-drone technology

According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the Australian government plans to invest more than $20 million USD in two Australian companies focused on anti-drone technology.

Earlier this April, Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles stated that, amid escalating global risks, Australia intends to increase its defence spending by A$53 billion over the next decade. This additional funding includes an extra A$14 billion in appropriations over the next four years.

The ABC reported: "The Australian government will invest A$30 million (approximately $21.5 million USD) in two Australian companies specializing in anti-drone technology."

One of these companies, Sypaq Systems, is developing an armed drone designed to neutralize large drones, while the other company, AIM Defence, is working on a high-energy laser weapon for anti-drone purposes.

As reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, this investment forms part of the government's broader plan over the next ten years to spend around $500 million USD on anti-drone measures.

Using NATO’s calculation method, Australia’s defence spending is expected to reach around 3% of its GDP by 2033. Some of the investments will also go toward upgrading the Henderson Naval Base in western Australia, which will provide maintenance services for nuclear-powered submarines under the AUKUS security partnership framework between Australia, the UK, and the US.
