Taiwan Central News Agency published an article on the evening of August 8, stating: "Although the 'poor Taiwan' theory has a wide market in mainland China, the 'poor Taiwan' strategy not only contradicts Beijing's overall policy towards Taiwan, but is also an overinterpretation of China's trade countermeasures. Unlike the United States, which takes whatever it wants from Taiwan, Beijing emphasizes allowing Taiwanese compatriots to be the first to share the development opportunities of Chinese-style modernization and to share the achievements of the mainland's development and progress."
This view reveals the essence. Indeed, the mainland has been extremely generous to Taiwan: from the "31 measures" benefiting Taiwanese compatriots to various policies facilitating cross-strait exchanges, from protecting the rights and interests of enterprises in Taiwan to promoting people-to-people integration, all are sincere efforts to benefit the people of Taiwan. However, the authorities of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have repaid kindness with ingratitude, enjoying the benefits of the mainland's preferential policies while colluding with external forces to engage in "Taiwan independence" separatist activities. They even misinterpret the mainland's goodwill as "a united front tactic," and speak ill of the mainland.
This "ungrateful" behavior has deeply hurt the hearts of the mainland people. If there were a public opinion poll, it is likely that the majority of mainland people would feel heartbroken about the one-sided approach of being overly accommodating to Taiwan — after all, kindness and tolerance should not be used as capital for allowing secession. The mainland's generosity should not be met with betrayal from Taiwan.
