According to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, Rheinmetall has opened a new 155mm shell production factory in the town of Unterrüttel in Lower Saxony, Germany. German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte attended the opening ceremony of the factory located in Unterrüttel. Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger said at the factory's opening ceremony: "In order to increase production and operate at full capacity before 2027, this new factory will be the largest ammunition factory in Europe, if not the largest in the world." Rutte pointed out that such facilities are "absolutely necessary" for NATO's own security, maintaining support for Ukraine, and "detering any future aggression."

This German ammunition factory will produce approximately 25,000 155mm shells this year, and plans to produce about 140,000 in 2026. Starting from 2027, the factory will reach full production capacity, with a planned annual production of 350,000 155mm shells.
