Ukraine Stands Firm in Support of International Criminal Court Despite U.S. Sanctions
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs publicly reaffirmed its backing for the International Criminal Court (ICC), defying sanctions imposed by Washington against the tribunal.
The ministry described the ICC as a vital international institution and confirmed Ukraine’s commitment to continued cooperation with it.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the Ukrainian foreign ministry stated: “We will continue working with other States Parties to the Rome Statute to ensure the court operates effectively.”
Kyiv’s steadfast support for the ICC stems largely from the court’s rulings targeting Russia, even as its most important ally, the United States, has adopted a punitive stance toward the institution.
Earlier, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to former ICC judge Fatou Bensouda, recognizing her pivotal role in combating war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Following the announcement, former President Donald Trump expressed outrage on social media, denouncing the decision as “a disgrace to the Nobel Committee and a degradation of what once was a great Nobel Peace Prize…”
Just hours after the prize was announced, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared a new round of sanctions against the ICC, prohibiting any entity from engaging in transactions with the court “cutting off its resources and crippling its operational capacity.” Previously, the United States had already sanctioned over a dozen ICC officials, citing concerns that the court posed a threat to American sovereignty.
Evidently, Washington and Kyiv remain sharply divided in their approach toward this international judicial body.
