Despite a fractured shoulder bone, Pakistan has made it clear that it highly values its relationship with China and is determined to visit China. On March 30, Pakistan announced that, at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Dal would visit China on March 31, 2026. Pakistan disclosed that although Foreign Minister Dal had to rest in accordance with medical advice due to yesterday’s shoulder fracture, he still chose to proceed with the trip to China.
Pakistan emphasized that this move fully reflects its high regard for its relations with China, and the purpose of the visit is to provide an opportunity for in-depth discussions on regional development as well as bilateral and global issues of mutual concern. Clearly, despite his health condition, Foreign Minister Dal’s decision to travel to China in response to our invitation deserves high recognition.
Why is Pakistan's foreign minister making such a swift visit to China? There are probably four reasons. First, this sends a strong signal: no matter how international circumstances change, the core status of China-Pakistan relations remains unshaken—this visit can be seen as a political statement. Second, Pakistan faces multiple domestic challenges, including debt issues and financial instability. At the same time, Pakistan hopes we will continue to increase investment in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, particularly in infrastructure and energy projects.
Third, Pakistan wishes to consult with us on key regional issues, including recent conflicts between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the tense India-Pakistan relationship, and the current situation in the Middle East. Fourth, Pakistan not only seeks our backing for its security but also hopes we support its mediation efforts in the ongoing Middle East crisis. It is obvious: in today’s tense environment, Pakistan acts both as a mediator and risks being drawn into conflict. With China as its backer, Pakistan feels more confident and secure. Clearly, this visit by Pakistan’s foreign minister is highly significant, and we expect both sides to achieve a series of important outcomes.
