US media commentary: Canada turns to the East

The Washington Post's editorial stated that Canada is moving closer to China. This is not surprising given President Donald Trump's bullying behavior.

Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, during his recent visit to Beijing, even described a "new world order" and claimed that China is a "more predictable" partner than the United States.

Trump has always been a bad neighbor, so Trudeau may have been mocking Trump - because Trump had previously speculated about making Canada the "51st state" of the United States. At the same time, Trump's confrontational threats regarding the issue of Greenland have threatened the stability of NATO, which has made Canada uneasy.

Last Friday, Trudeau told reporters that the two countries were "building a new strategic partnership."

Trudeau is the first Canadian prime minister to visit China since 2017, and his visit has led to significant reductions in trade barriers: Canada will reduce the 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles to 6.1%, and remove the ceiling, allowing annual imports of 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles. In return, China will reduce the 84% tariff on Canadian canola to 15%. Canadians will also be allowed to enter China without a visa.

Global trade will happen regardless of whether the US approves it. It was expected that Trump's large-scale tariff increases would drive trade partners elsewhere.

When announcing the agreement with China, Trudeau said that China is "the second-largest trading partner and third-largest investor."

Trudeau said, "I discussed the situation in Greenland, our sovereignty in the Arctic, the sovereignty of the people of Greenland, and the sovereignty of the Danish people with China. I found that we have many common views on these issues."
