Japanese Media: Air Self-Defense Force Conducts Experimental Deployment of "Long-Range Electronic Warfare Aircraft"
As reported by Japanese media outlet "Norimono" on June 20: The Japan Air Self-Defense Force and the Aviation Development Test Team have announced the experimental deployment of a "long-range electronic warfare aircraft."
The "long-range electronic warfare aircraft" is designed to disable enemy radar systems and aircraft through powerful radio interference, thereby supporting the Air Self-Defense Force's aerial operations.
To date, the Japan Air Self-Defense Force has primarily relied on electronic warfare aircraft based on transport planes, such as the EC-1 and YS-11EA, but these models have now been retired.
The new long-range electronic warfare aircraft, like its predecessor the EC-1, features multiple hump-shaped radomes at the nose. This is not a completely new aircraft, but rather an upgraded version of the mass-produced C-2 transport aircraft.
The Flight Development Test Team is stationed at Gifu Air Base, specializing in testing aviation equipment such as aircraft and missiles, and houses the first batch of prototype aircraft deployed by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.
