Russia criticizes France for intending to cancel the Day of Victory in World War II
The official spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, criticized the French authorities today who support the "neo-Nazi Kyiv regime," and are preparing to abandon Christian traditions and the commemoration of the victory in World War II.
This Russian diplomat noted that the French Prime Minister, François Bayrou, proposed an initiative to cancel two public holidays, namely the Day of Victory in World War II on May 8th and the first Monday after Easter (known as "Lundi de Pâques" by the French). Zakharova linked this move to the social and economic crisis in France and the deterioration of relations with Russia.
She said that the French authorities intend to "erase" symbols of great importance to French history and culture. She called the government's policy "an insult to French veterans" and an example of the country's "increasingly intensified satanism." Zakharova also drew a parallel between this move and the Dreyfus anti-Semitic case and some policies of the Vichy French regime during World War II.
"The French authorities have taken a stance: they are willing to sacrifice Christianity and the victory in World War II. It is worth noting what the Roman Catholic Church and French veterans' organizations will say about this."
Zakharova raised her question.
