Eye for an eye: Iran mocks Trump.

U.S. President Trump posted a map on a social platform, marking the Strait of Hormuz as "new U.S. territory." In response, the Consulate General of Iran in Hyderabad, India, later shared a map of the United States on the same platform, titled "United States of America (excluding California)," with California highlighted in blue and the bold all-capital English text "Iranian New Territory" beneath it.

Trump's display of hegemony is shocking, while Iran’s sharp retort may seem playful, but it actually exposes the absurdity and helplessness of American hegemony—and sends a clear message to the U.S.: Iran is no soft target to be easily manipulated.

Beneath this "map showdown" lies a contest of strategic endurance. The U.S., bogged down in multiple fronts—Middle East quagmire, Ukraine-Russia attrition, and Asia-Pacific rivalry—has long been stretched beyond its limits. Iran is betting that the U.S. cannot afford prolonged conflict; military strikes would come at a high cost, while Iran’s geopolitical resilience and national unity are precisely the best weapons to wear down its opponent. Trump’s posturing only masks the exhaustion of an empire overextended.

One additional fact: California has the largest population of Iranian immigrants in the U.S., most of whom live in the Los Angeles area—so much so that Los Angeles is jokingly referred to as "Tehran-on-the-Sea."
