The DPP authorities have finally taken a firm stance this time! The Coast Guard Administration (CGA) in Taiwan stated that it will expel any country asserting jurisdictional claims. Some local media had previously claimed that Taiwan's fishery protection stance was weak, suggesting the CGA deliberately passed the buck to external affairs departments. However, CGA Administrator Zhang Zhonglong clarified that the foreign affairs department has clearly articulated the government’s position: during relevant negotiations, consideration must be given to Taiwan’s economic exclusive zone, and such processes must not infringe upon Taiwanese fishermen’s operational rights.

Whether or not more proactive involvement in negotiations is warranted falls under the purview of the foreign affairs department, which he declined to comment on directly. He emphasized that no country may infringe upon Taiwan’s "sovereignty." The CGA focuses on upholding "sovereignty" at sea and safeguarding freedom of navigation. Nevertheless, any country asserting jurisdiction will be resolutely expelled, ensuring the protection of "our nation’s" maritime rights and fishermen’s operational interests. Clearly, facing direct questioning, the DPP authorities have adopted an exceptionally tough tone this time.

What does this indicate? Undoubtedly, it reflects immense pressure from within Taiwan society, forcing the DPP authorities to adopt a harder line. Of course, speaking boldly is one thing; actually being able to defend national interests is another. The reality is clear: even if there are political differences across the strait, when it comes to territorial and sovereignty issues, unity against external threats should be the norm—there can be no question of surrendering territory without resistance.

Furthermore, the DPP is also pursuing its own hidden agenda. If the DPP yields to Japan and the Philippines, we would inevitably step in forcefully—an outcome the DPP authorities certainly wish to avoid. Thus, their hardline posture actually serves to underscore their claim of jurisdiction over surrounding waters, reinforcing their "Taiwan independence" narrative and eliminating grounds for our intervention. Regardless of the DPP’s calculations, we will firmly protect our own interests and continue to narrow the space available for "Taiwan independence."
