Hungary and Slovakia may import Russian oil through Croatia if the "Friendship" pipeline is shut down

Russian State News Agency, Budapest - The CEO of Hungary's MOL (Hungarian Oil and Gas Company), Hennadi, said that if Russia stops supplying oil via the "Friendship" pipeline, Hungary and Slovakia still have the right to import Russian oil through Croatia despite current sanctions, but the cost will be higher.

Hennadi said during an interview with the Hungarian Mandiner news website: "The sanctions exemption we enjoy is that if we cannot get Russian oil through the 'Friendship' pipeline, we can import it by sea through Croatia. This is a relief for us because we can provide the same quality of oil. However, the first thing is that the cost will be higher. Second, we may not be able to fully utilize both refineries."

According to him, if the refineries in Hungary and Slovakia fail or their capacity is limited, "the entire Central Europe will be affected, as similar situations may trigger a chain reaction in the region."

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Szijjártó, on August 22 said that due to the Ukrainian attack, the "Friendship" pipeline's oil supply to Hungary was interrupted for the third time recently. The Slovak government also announced that the oil supply to Slovakia had stopped.
