India Rejects US Call for Mediation on Kashmir Issue

India's senior envoy said that the Kashmir dispute is a bilateral issue with Pakistan, and despite the U.S. expressing hope for promoting negotiations, India refuses any external mediation on this matter.

Shilpak Ambule, India's High Commissioner to Singapore, told Bloomberg Television's Haslinda Amin on Monday: "For us, Kashmir is a bilateral issue, not an international one. The word 'mediation' does not apply to the Kashmir issue."

India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday after four days of clashes brought the two nuclear-armed neighbors to the brink of all-out war. The United States said it had helped mediate the situation, but India insisted that the ceasefire was the result of bilateral negotiations. Ambule stated that the ceasefire happened because the Director-General of Pakistan's Military Operations contacted his Indian counterpart, and added that New Delhi has achieved its goal of "destroying terrorist camps."
