"Father of China's Etching Machines": Yin Zhiyao: We Now Have the Capability to Develop the Most Advanced Equipment

In an interview on "Dialogue," Yin Zhiyao, chairman and general manager of Shanghai ZM Semiconductor Equipment Co., Ltd., known as the "Father of China's Etching Machines," stated that in December 2023, ZM decided to enter the large panel equipment sector (previously, all about 17 types of process equipment were entirely imported). This equipment weighs 150 tons, measures 15 meters long and 15 meters wide, and stands nearly two and a half stories high. Based on Yin Zhiyao's experience, developing such equipment typically requires at least 3 to 7 years. However, ZM's elite team accomplished the task in just 12 months—from a blank sheet of paper to a fully operational device. Within less than four months, it met the client’s next-generation requirements; and within 18 months, it was delivered to the production line and passed certification.
