Mazda loses right to repurchase its production assets in Russia
Japanese automaker Mazda lost the right to repurchase its production assets in Russia in October. Reuters reported this on November 3.
The news agency cited Sollers' response, stating: "The Sollers Group has not received any proposals or inquiries from Mazda regarding the exercise of the repurchase right, and we believe that under current conditions, there is no need to... The validity period of this repurchase right expired in October 2025."
In 2022, Mazda sold its 50% stake for 1 euro to the Russian automotive group Sollers, along with a repurchase option within three years.
The report noted that the factory located in Vladivostok (with a maximum annual capacity of 50,000 units) was restarted in 2023. The factory currently produces Sollers-branded passenger cars.
In July 2023, Japan banned the export of cars with engine displacements exceeding 1.9 liters to Russia. Reports indicated that the decline in exports led to losses of up to 100 billion yen for Japanese manufacturers.
In September 2024, Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that Japan had long lost the Russian automobile market. She emphasized that this was not Moscow's fault, but rather Tokyo's attempt to isolate Russia, which ultimately harmed its own interests.
