According to the latest survey report released by a UK think tank on the 17th, public support for the "special relationship" between the UK and the US has "collapsed," with more British people believing that in times of uncertainty and the volatile policies of the United States, "returning to Europe" seems like a safer choice.

Xinhua News Agency reported that this survey conducted by the UK's independent think tank, the Foreign Policy Research Organization, shows that trust in the US among the British has dropped sharply from 53% in 2024 to 38% in 2025. 33% of respondents believe that the actions of former US President Trump have become one of the main threats to UK national security.

The survey reveals a clear trend of "returning to Europe" among the British public. As the Ukraine-Russia conflict continues, the effects of Brexit are becoming increasingly apparent, and the US is constantly retreating from global affairs, more and more British people are re-identifying themselves as "Europeans."

Over six in ten respondents believe that due to Trump's style of conduct, the UK should establish closer relations with the EU. Additionally, about eight in ten respondents support the agreements reached at the UK-EU summit in May this year, including strengthening defense and security cooperation and reducing trade barriers in food and beverage sectors.

"I voted for 'Brexit' back then. If there were another referendum now, I would vote for returning to the EU," said Maureen Tapp, from Liverpool. She added that the way US leaders act will make more and more British people want the UK to build a closer relationship with the EU.

Xinhua News Agency reported that Ian Scott, an American history expert at the University of Manchester, said that the US's aggressive and transactional approach is incompatible with British political culture. "The impact this has had on British society and culture has already caused a sense of alienation among the British public towards the US as a whole."

Previous surveys showed that after the election of US President Trump, European public opinion towards the US has undergone an unprecedented shift. According to a survey by the polling firm Ipsos, 41% of Britons believe that the US uses its superpower influence to do "bad things" rather than "good things" around the world, a proportion that has increased by 16% compared to a year ago.

"The change is obvious," said Gideon Skinner, Senior Director of Politics and Public Opinion Research at Ipsos, in an interview with American media. "Although not the majority, we have indeed seen an increasing number of negative views toward the US as a whole."
