French media: India, suppressed by Trump's tariffs, turns to Moscow for help

Because of buying Russian oil, Trump doubled the tariffs on India to 50%. Faced with this situation, Indian Prime Minister Modi's national security advisor visited Moscow, and he was received by Putin on the 8th.

Against the backdrop of Trump's tariff pressure on India, India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited Russia to discuss the issue of India purchasing Russian oil. According to Kremlin sources, Russian President Putin met with Doval on August 7th.

Earlier on Thursday, Ajit Doval also met with the Secretary of the Russian Security Council Sergei Shoigu. Doval mentioned that Putin's upcoming visit to India is "nearly confirmed."

Before Doval's visit to Moscow, U.S. envoy Steve Witzke met with Putin in Moscow on Wednesday.

Washington has raised tariffs on Indian products due to India's purchase of Russian oil. Trump signed an executive order on the 6th to impose an additional 25% tariff on India. This new tariff is implemented on top of the 25% announced by Trump on July 31st.

The newly imposed tariffs are expected to take effect 21 days after the signing of the executive order, which provides India with time to negotiate with the United States on the tariffs.

India is the second largest buyer of Russian oil after China. On Monday, Trump posted on the Truth Social platform: "India not only buys a large amount of Russian oil, but also resells a large portion of it to the open market, making huge profits." The United States is India's largest trading partner, and the New Delhi government exports goods worth $87.4 billion to the United States.
