Foreign media: Apple is lobbying the Trump administration to approve its procurement of chips from China's CXMT, a memory chip manufacturer blacklisted by the U.S. Pentagon, in order to alleviate financial pressure caused by soaring memory chip prices driven by AI data center construction.
Apple submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Commerce over a month ago and has also reached out to other government officials and Washington allies.
CXMT is China's largest memory chip manufacturer. Previously designated as a "military-industrial enterprise" by the Department of Defense during the Biden administration, it was later added to the Commerce Department’s Entity List with approval from a cross-agency committee. U.S. companies seeking to export goods, software, or technology to entities on this list must apply for licenses, which are highly likely to be denied.
Apple recently raised iPad and MacBook prices due to its inability to bear the rapidly increasing costs of memory and storage chips.
