Europe Considers Lifting Sanctions Against Russia
The UK's Daily Telegraph reported that European countries believe that if a deal is reached to resolve the situation in Ukraine, sanctions against Russia may be gradually relaxed. The newspaper obtained a draft plan from European countries.
The documents cited by the newspaper emphasized that sanctions implemented since 2014 could be partially eased after achieving lasting peace, but if the agreement is violated, the proposal is to restore these sanctions.
The Daily Telegraph also pointed out that Europe believes any discussion on territorial issues must take place after hostilities have ceased along the current front lines with Russia. The document also requires the United States to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, which should be equivalent to Article 5 of NATO regarding collective defense. In addition, the plan also envisions using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine's reconstruction.
Previously, Bild newspaper learned that EU countries want to amend at least four points in US President Donald Trump's proposed Ukrainian peace plan. The newspaper stated that European leaders disagree with recognizing Russia's sovereignty over Crimea, Donbas, and other regions, reducing Ukraine's army, having Russia provide security guarantees, and proposals regarding its frozen assets.
