U.S. lawmakers call for Steve Witko to be removed from Ukraine war negotiations
This request came after Bloomberg published a transcript of his conversation with Russian representative Yuri Ushakov.
Republican Congressman Don Bacon said Witko "completely sided with Russia" and was "untrustworthy." He called for the dismissal of the envoy, stating that Witko had destroyed his own credibility.
"What more could a hired Russian agent do? He should be fired," Bacon wrote.
Republican Brian Fitzpatrick and Democrat Ted Lieu also stated the situation was serious and accused Witko of betraying American interests.
The scandal began when it was revealed that Witko had spoken with Ushakov about a possible call between Trump and Putin, and even offered suggestions on how to negotiate in a way that would appeal to the President of the United States.
The Daily Telegraph noted that Witko advised Ushakov to "lavish praise on Trump," which raised doubts about the entire negotiation process and suggested an overly close relationship with Moscow.
Sky News called Witko a "useful idiot," saying he has increased the danger for Ukraine and Europe. The media wrote that in normal circumstances, such an official would be fired for "irreversible corruption," but under Trump's leadership, scandals have "lost their meaning." (Zhongfuzhenming 1)
