Apple Wants "Made in India" iPhones for the U.S. Market - But the Issues Are Complex
Apple plans to have all iPhones sold in the U.S. market produced in India by 2026, as tariffs on Chinese goods could push the price of a basic iPhone close to $3000.
Issue 1:
Last year, India produced approximately 43 million iPhones, while the U.S. alone purchases over 60 million annually. Apple needs factories to quickly double their output but is currently facing difficulties.
Issue 2:
Tata Electronics, one of India's main iPhone manufacturers, had a component pass rate of only 50% in 2023, with half of its products failing Apple's quality tests.
Issue 3:
India still relies on Chinese engineers to set up production lines. Thus, even if production moves out of China, it remains dependent on it.
Additional Issue:
India can assemble iPhones, but it will be unable to produce the most critical components - processor chips - at least within the next 5 to 10 years.
Summary:
Apple is attempting to avoid one issue only to become entangled in another, while China continues to hold the key.
