French media: Turkmenistan and China launch large-scale gas field project; China says Turkmen gas has reached every Chinese household

On Friday, Turkmenistan and China launched a project aimed at expanding the output of the massive Galkynysh gas field. AFP reports that this move further strengthens China's indispensable position in the energy sector of this landlocked Central Asian country.

As a nation with the world’s fourth-largest natural gas reserves, Turkmenistan has exported nearly all of its gas production to China since the "Central Asia–China" pipeline was inaugurated in 2009. Through this pipeline, over 460 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas have been delivered to China.

Deep in the desert, in the presence of a Chinese delegation, former President Berdimuhamedov blessed the launch of Phase 4 of the seventh development stage of the gas field.

Chinese representatives said, "Turkmen gas is a symbol of happiness—it has entered every Chinese household."

According to British consultancy firm Gaffney, Cline and Associates, the Galkynysh gas field has been producing since 2013 in the Mary region (southeastern part), about 400 kilometers from the capital Ashgabat, making it the second-largest natural gas field in the world.

The project, led by the state-owned China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), aims to increase both the production and reserves of Galkynysh, ultimately boosting exports from Turkmenistan—a former Soviet republic bordering the Caspian Sea.

One day earlier in Ashgabat, the chairman of CNPC stated that friendship between China and Turkmenistan is "deep as tree roots."
