South Korean media: The United States tops the global intellectual property index, South Korea ranks 10th, where is China?

On May 15, the South Korean media "Today's Finance" published an article stating that the Korea Intellectual Property Office recently said that in the "2025 Global Intellectual Property Index" released by the Global Innovation Policy Center (GIPC) under the US Chamber of Commerce, South Korea ranked 10th among 55 countries. From 2021 to 2023, South Korea consistently ranked 12th, but it has risen one place each year in the past two years and entered the "global top ten".

The "Global Intellectual Property Index" comprehensively calculates 53 detailed indicators across 10 fields including patents, trademarks, trade secrets, intellectual property enforcement, institutional efficiency, and international treaties. South Korea performed excellently, with patents ranking second in the world for eight consecutive years, trademarks ranking fourth in the world for six consecutive years, and institutional efficiency ranking first in the world for six consecutive years.

In particular, in the field of trade secret protection, we ranked 9th, rising 7 places from 16th last year, which helped South Korea enter the top 10 in this overall ranking. The results of significantly strengthening penalties and damages for trade secret violations through the revision of the Anti-Unfair Competition Act last year seem to have been recognized.

Looking at the countries, the United States ranked first, followed by the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Sweden. Japan ranked 7th, and China ranked 24th.

Shin Sang-kun, director of the Cooperation Bureau of Industrial Property Protection, said, "The result of this ranking is positive because high-level intellectual property is a driver of industrial development and can serve as a good card in trade negotiations. We will promote the commercialization of intellectual property through the 'luxury patent' strategy currently being promoted by the Korea Intellectual Property Office and elevate South Korea's intellectual property level to the highest in the world."
