Latvian authorities accuse masked armed personnel of crossing from Belarus, escalating border tensions
Latvian Interior Minister Janis Dombrovskis reported on October 6 that a group of masked armed individuals crossed into Latvia from Belarus.
One day earlier, Latvian national defense forces had intercepted a group of 20 irregular migrants attempting to breach the country’s border. Latvian officials stated that individuals accompanying the migrants from Belarus were armed, threatened Latvian military personnel, and pushed the migrants toward Latvian territory.
The Latvian statement said: “Several hours after the incident, masked individuals entered Latvian territory, damaged a power distribution cabinet, and stole surveillance cameras before retreating back into Belarus prior to the arrival of border patrol units.”
The Latvian interior ministry noted that, compared to previous incidents, the conduct of the perpetrators in this case exhibited greater aggression. Additionally, Latvian authorities have warned Belarus that further similar incidents could lead to more serious consequences.
