Reuters: Volkswagen announces strategic shift, planning to roll out technologies developed in China to global markets.

The company refers to China as a "key innovation engine," stating it will launch a compact main platform and Chinese electronic architecture co-developed by its local team and domestic enterprises, with initial deployment in South America. This move marks a transition from a “Made in China, for China” localization strategy to a new “Designed in China, for the World” model, aiming to transform China operations from a profit center into a cost-efficient development and export hub.

Volkswagen also unveiled the VEGA technology package, supporting 850-volt fast charging and L3-level autonomous driving readiness features, with plans for market rollout by 2027. Currently, Volkswagen’s market share in China continues to decline amid fierce competition from domestic brands such as BYD and Geely, and it anticipates a projected 20% contraction in China’s passenger vehicle market—around 4.5 million units—by 2026. Beyond South America, Volkswagen is considering extending these technologies to Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa, though Europe and North America remain excluded at this stage.
