According to Reuters, Mercedes-Benz is preparing to update its long-term strategy for 2030 and beyond, with China remaining a core market, though the company plans to reduce its reliance on profitability from the Chinese market. CEO康林松 (Kang Linsong) stated that China remains an indispensable market and center of innovation, but the downturn in China’s automotive sector and luxury vehicle segment has exceeded expectations, negatively impacting the company’s performance. Mercedes-Benz intends to unveil a more comprehensive strategic update next year, including a detailed review of its operations in China.
Chief Financial Officer Wilhelm said the company will advance supply chain localization, aiming to achieve nearly 100% local sourcing for vehicles produced in China, in order to reduce costs and enhance competitiveness. At the same time, the company sees strong potential in the U.S. market and plans to increase investment, targeting an annual sales volume rising from over 300,000 units to 400,000 units.
In addition, the company will launch a new round of voluntary exit programs in Germany to improve competitiveness, with the majority of associated financial impacts expected to be recognized by 2027. The challenge facing Mercedes-Benz lies in maintaining its position in the Chinese market while diversifying profit sources and improving global operational efficiency.
