The U.S. Supreme Court bans Trump from sending Venezuelans to El Salvador prison under the Foreign Enemies Law.
The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked the Trump administration's attempt to use wartime law to deport about 176 Venezuelans to the notorious El Salvador prison, criticizing the government for failing to fully inform these individuals of its deportation plan.
Despite objections from two judges, the court extended a previous order prohibiting Trump from expelling suspected gang members detained in Texas immigration detention centers under the Foreign Enemies Law of 1798. The majority opinion of the Supreme Court stated: "In this case, the interests of detainees are particularly important." The court added, "Notice issued approximately 24 hours before deportation, lacking information on how to exercise their rights to due process to contest deportation, certainly does not comply with regulations."
