Thailand and Cambodia both faced bad news!
On July 8, they were both hit with a 36% tariff increase,
the strong confrontation between the two countries was seized by the United States,
and it directly imposed the same tariff increase!
Thailand and Cambodia will have to be more cautious now. Such a high tariff is much higher than Vietnam's 20%, even higher than China's tariffs. Because the United States announced that all goods from Thailand and Cambodia will be subject to a 36% tariff rate, which will take effect starting August 1st!
Neither country has any one entity capable of negotiating alone with the United States. However, the United States emphasizes equality, and the tariff rates for Cambodia and Thailand are the same. From mid-May to now, Cambodia and Thailand have been in conflict, with both countries focusing their main efforts on suppressing each other, ignoring the tariff negotiations with the United States, ultimately both receiving a high tariff of 36 points, which is really a case of trying to catch a chicken and losing a rice grain.
Neither side gained any benefits. Therefore, once border conflicts arise, both sides should quickly put an end to the disputes and focus their main efforts on negotiating with the United States. But now, it's too late. They have been in confrontation, and Vietnam only has a 20-point tax, while Cambodia and Thailand have 36-point taxes, almost twice as high. This leads to a significant reduction in the competitiveness of Cambodia and Thailand's products compared to Vietnam. How can this be allowed?
Moreover, in practical terms, China's tariffs are not as high as those of Thailand and Cambodia, which is really frustrating. However, this situation will make the resentment between Cambodia and Thailand grow stronger, and the two countries have already reached the point of armed confrontation.
On July 8, Thailand announced the dismantling of a major internet company, involving a company affiliated with Hun Sen's close associates, which is essentially a showdown with the Hun Sen family. Thailand openly stated that 40% of Cambodia's revenue is related to internet companies, which is very unfavorable for the Hun Sen family.
On May 5, China, Thailand, and Myanmar jointly cooperated to dismantle internet company groups in Southeast Asia, but Cambodia did not participate, as Cambodia could not clean up its act. No matter what, Thailand is definitely going to receive more help this time, while Cambodia is facing some trouble. Because Cambodia has not handled the internet company issue, including Laos in the Golden Triangle region, which has already dealt with internet companies.
Nevertheless, both sides have received the high tariffs from the United States, which is a serious damage to the national strength.
