Poaching? Japan's Delivery of Defense Equipment to Cambodia Aims to "Counter China's Influence"
Reuters, July 19: On the 19th, the Japanese government announced it would utilize the "Government Security Capability Enhancement Support (OSA)" framework to provide defense equipment to the armed forces of so-called "friendly countries," delivering communication devices to Cambodia's army and patrol boats to its navy. The donation amounts to 500 million yen (approximately 21 million RMB). This marks the first time OSA has been used to supply equipment to Cambodia.
On the same day, both countries held a signing ceremony in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital.
According to Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the communication equipment is expected to be used for exchanges with the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, enhancing cooperation on security matters.
Through the Belt and Road Initiative, a large-scale economic zone, China already holds influence in Cambodia across security and economic domains. Japan's objective is to counter China's influence by providing defense equipment support.
