Trump Announces Global "Reciprocal" Tariff Plan: Kazakhstan 27%, Highest in Central Asia

Kazinform News Agency, April 3rd - U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to impose "reciprocal" tariffs on goods exported from dozens of countries and the EU to the United States. According to the tariff list released by the White House official social platform X, Kazakhstan's tariff rate was set at 27%, the highest among Central Asian countries.

The White House mentioned in its statement that this tariff adjustment is part of the "reciprocal tariff" policy. The left side of the tariff list lists the tariff rates applied by various countries to U.S. goods, including factors such as exchange rate impact and trade barriers, while the right side shows the U.S. responsive tariff measures. Among them, some countries can enjoy a 50% reduction discount, and the tariff rate for most countries is 10%.

New tariff rates for Commonwealth of Independent States countries are as follows:

Moldova - 31%

Kazakhstan - 27%

Armenia - 10%

Azerbaijan - 10%

Georgia - 10%

Uzbekistan - 10%

Turkmenistan - 10%

Kyrgyzstan - 10%

Tajikistan - 10%

Data shows that in 2024, Kazakhstan exported $1.97 billion worth of goods to the United States, setting a record high over the past decade. Among them, major export commodities include oil, uranium (grew five times year-on-year), ferroalloys, and silver.

According to statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics of Kazakhstan, the United States accounted for 2.4% of Kazakhstan's total exports. Kazakhstan's main export partners are Italy (22.9%), China (18.3%), Russia (11.7%), Netherlands (6.5%), France (4.5%), and Turkey (4.1%).

Meanwhile, the United States is also an important source of imports for Kazakhstan. In 2024, Kazakhstan imported a total of $2.24 billion worth of goods from the United States, accounting for 3.4% of the country's total import value, ranking fourth. The top three were Russia (30.5%), China (25.3%), and Germany (4.7%).

Analysts believe that the new U.S. tariff policy may have a direct impact on uranium and oil exports from Kazakhstan to the United States and may affect bilateral trade relations to a certain extent.
