EU Commission President: US Tariffs Have Severely Struck Global Enterprises and Consumers
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump are a severe blow to global enterprises and consumers. The EU is ready to negotiate with the US on this issue while preparing countermeasures.
Von der Leyen wrote on social media X: "The general tariffs announced by the US have severely struck global enterprises and consumers."
Von der Leyen said that the EU is ready to negotiate with the US on tariff issues and believes it is not too late to reach an agreement.
She wrote on social media X: "At the same time, we are prepared to respond. We have reached a consensus on the first round of retaliatory measures for steel tariffs. Now, we are preparing further countermeasures to protect our interests and enterprises, if negotiations fail... but there is another way, and it's not too late to negotiate."
Von der Leyen said that EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic has been in contact with US partners.
US President Donald Trump announced that he would impose "reciprocal" tariffs on products from other countries. The minimum tax rate is 10%, but the rate for each country will be adjusted to half of the tariffs levied by these countries on companies importing American products. Trump said this will be America's "declaration of economic independence" and will help use "trillions of dollars" to repay national debt.
The US will impose a 20% tariff on goods imported from EU countries.
