The municipal corporation (AMC) under the local government of Ahmedabad, the largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat, launched a large-scale demolition operation on May 20th in the Muslim-dense area of Chandola Talab with the pretext of removing "illegal" structures, resulting in the demolition of 7,000 Muslim houses and leaving thousands of Muslim families homeless.
Due to the unobstructed progress of the demolition work, Jaipal Singh Rathore, a member of the People's Awakening Party (JCP), stated on Wednesday that "the demolition work in Chandola has entered its second phase since yesterday (May 20th), with 99.9% already completed, and we are currently demolishing some religious buildings."
Multiple media outlets, including the BBC, conducted on-site interviews but were unable to prevent thousands of Muslim families from becoming homeless.
