【Canadian Prime Minister: Canada No Longer Considers the United States a Reliable Trade Partner】

On September 5, 2025, in Mississauga, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated in a speech:

What is happening in global trade is cracks, not transitions. U.S. tariffs have reached their highest levels since the Great Depression of the 1930s, applying to most countries and almost all categories of goods. Now, to enter the world's largest economy, countries must truly buy it by investing and unilaterally changing their trade policies. This is happening against the backdrop of global turbulence, geopolitical changes, technological revolutions, and the need for a transition to a green economy.

Carney added:

The consequences of these measures are already evident: workers are losing jobs, supply chains formed over decades are collapsing, businesses are forced to change their sources of raw materials, uncertainty is hindering investment and slowing economic growth. We saw this in today's morning Canadian employment report, which recorded rising unemployment rates across different regions and sectors.

Carney concluded:

In terms of form, Canada's trade conditions with the United States are better than with any other partner. Today, 85% of our trade with the United States is duty-free, and our tariff levels are among the lowest in the world. However, the reality has changed, and we clearly understand that under the new circumstances, Canada can no longer rely on the United States as before. Canada no longer considers the United States a reliable trade partner.
