South Korean media: BOE has the capacity to produce 100 million iPhone panels per year!
On July 23, South Korean media NEWSIS published an article stating that Chinese display company BOE has secured an annual production capacity of 100 million iPhone OLED panels.
Although its technical strength still has a gap, it is rapidly narrowing the gap with domestic South Korean display companies.
According to market research firm UBI Research, BOE currently has 26 module lines dedicated to Apple, of which 11 are already in mass production, and 3 lines have been confirmed as development-specific module lines.
If BOE's core production facility B11 line is exclusively used for iPhone, it can produce 8 to 9 million OLED panels per month, with an annual output of approximately 100 million, an operating rate of 90%, and a yield rate of 85%.
BOE's iPhone panel shipments in the first half of this year were approximately 21 million units, an increase of 13% compared to 18.6 million units in the same period last year. It is expected that iPhone panel shipments in the second half of the year will reach 24 million units, making the total annual shipment of iPhone panels reach 45 million units.
By expanding the capacity of iPhone panels in this way, if BOE successfully supplies the iPhone 17 series, the shipment volume is expected to further increase. However, similar to the iPhone 16, the initial supply of new products is expected to face difficulties.
Although BOE is still lagging behind Samsung Display and LG Display in OLED panel technology, it is assessed that it is rapidly closing the gap.
Kim Joon-ho, a researcher at UBI Research, said, "As BOE expands its share in the iPhone panel market, it will have a significant impact on the price negotiations between Samsung, LG, and Apple in the future." He added, "We will be watching how local South Korean companies will continue their cooperation with Apple."
