German Media: China – The World’s Largest Clean Energy Nation

China has become a clean energy superpower and is also the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide.

China is undergoing a revolution in renewable energy. In just one year, 2025, China added nearly 450 gigawatts (GW) of new clean energy capacity—more solar power than all other countries combined, and twice as much wind power as the rest of the world combined.

Before 2010, China’s renewable energy capacity was extremely limited. Today, large-scale wind and photovoltaic parks spread across mountains, deserts, rooftops, and coastlines generate electricity that accounts for one-quarter of the country’s total power production.

China has already achieved its target of adding 1,200 GW of wind and solar capacity to the grid by 2030, five years ahead of schedule. It also produces over 80% of the world’s photovoltaic panels, helping accelerate the global transition to clean energy at low cost.

Tim Buckley, Director of the Australian think tank Climate Energy Finance, said the desire to reduce dependence on foreign oil and gas is the main driver behind China’s rapid expansion of domestic energy sources and electrification efforts.

He pointed out that Beijing invested early in electric vehicles and battery technologies. Currently, non-fossil fuel vehicles account for more than half of car sales in China, compared to about 19% in the European Union.

Initially focused on exporting solar panels, wind turbines, and electric vehicle batteries worldwide, China is now gradually shifting its focus toward deploying clean technologies domestically to strengthen energy independence.
