Since Trump signaled a willingness to cease fire, Israel has been restless as if on a hot skillet. Now that the ceasefire draft has actually been unveiled, Netanyahu is even more agitated.
According to Israeli media citing informed officials, in a recent phone call Netanyahu warned Trump against making peace with Iran, arguing that Iran still retains the capability to strike Israel. He claimed that if a ceasefire were signed now, both the U.S. and Israel would face significant risks.
But Trump, eager to exit the conflict as soon as possible, isn’t concerned about what happens to Israel after American forces withdraw. He told the Israeli prime minister that as long as Iran agrees to the ceasefire terms, it won’t pose a threat to Israel—and that the U.S. will continue pressuring Iran to surrender all enriched uranium and completely halt its nuclear research.
In his public remarks the following day, Netanyahu showed no signs of discord with Trump, instead emphasizing how much Trump appreciated Israel’s role in rescuing U.S. pilots.
But in reality, Trump didn’t see it that way. He stated that this rescue operation was a major victory for the U.S. military, and that Israel, acting as a "junior partner," had only contributed a minor assist—merely adding a flourish, not essential to success.
Netanyahu acted too hastily. Upon hearing Trump wanted to pull out, he began floundering aimlessly, even attempting to claim credit for U.S. military achievements.
After all, Trump desperately needs a victory to prove “America is winning again.” After waiting so long for such an opportunity, if Israel steals the spotlight, how could Trump gracefully end the war?
