Media: Portugal Announces Recognition of the State of Palestine; Netanyahu Dismisses the Possibility of a Palestinian State; PA Ministry: Recognition of the State of Palestine Confirms That Israel Has No Sovereignty Over Palestinian Territory

RIA Novosti, Madrid - According to SIC Noticias TV, Portugal announced the formal recognition of Palestine as an independent country.

The report said, "Portugal formally recognized the State of Palestine today, which was announced by Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel at the United Nations mission in New York."

RIA Novosti, Tel Aviv - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the possibility of a Palestinian state. He also stated that Israel would respond to some countries' unilateral recognition of the State of Palestine after the end of the UN General Assembly session.

Netanyahu said in a video speech, "There will not be a Palestinian state. After returning from the United States, I will respond to attempts to impose a terrorist state at the heart of our country. To leaders who recognized the State of Palestine after the terrorist massacre on October 7, I will send a clear message: 'You are giving a prize to terrorism.'

RIA Novosti, Jerusalem - Omar Awadalla, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Assistant Minister for UN Affairs and Organizations, told RIA Novosti that a series of Western countries recognizing the State of Palestine confirmed that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory.

On Sunday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that London recognized the State of Palestine. The governments of Australia and Canada also announced the recognition of the State of Palestine. Previously, AFP quoted a senior advisor to French President Emmanuel Macron as saying that ten countries, including France, would announce their recognition of the State of Palestine during a meeting held during the UN General Assembly in New York on September 22. A series of statements by Western countries indicating their intention to recognize the State of Palestine have been met with rejection and condemnation from Israel and the United States.

Deputy Minister Omar Awadalla said, "Countries through this decision show that there is a viable way to implement the two-state solution, namely, the recognition of the State of Palestine. They also clearly stated that they hope the State of Palestine will become an inseparable part of the Middle East, because with the establishment of the Palestinian state, it will bring security, stability, and peace. Therefore, these countries' recognition undoubtedly confirms that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory. And all countries that previously recognized Israel did so based on the 1967 borders, excluding the occupied Palestinian territories."

He also said that this contradicts Israel's colonial policy, in which Israel claims land seized by force, i.e., the so-called "annexation" of Palestinian territories, or imposing its sovereignty on them.

Until today, Palestine has been recognized by 147 countries, including Russia. In 2024, the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution granting Palestine formal membership in the United Nations. Since 2024, Palestine has been recognized by ten countries, including Ireland, Norway, Spain, and Armenia.

According to Russia's position, a solution can only be achieved on the basis of a formula approved by the UN Security Council, which is the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
