Is it really over? Ukraine is willing to make territorial concessions and accept Putin's two demands
According to the "Republica" report, on August 22, Oleksiy A. Podolyak, a senior advisor to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, said in an interview that Ukraine may make certain concessions for a peace agreement, including freezing the front lines on some battlefields.
He pointed out that the Ukrainian government understands that one of the basic solutions to getting out of this war is to stop fighting along the existing front line.
This means that some areas will be effectively under Russian control, but Ukraine will not legally recognize the change in sovereignty of these territories.
Podolyak also emphasized that in the future, Ukraine will use various means such as economy and diplomacy to strive to recover these areas, but the current top priority is to end the war.
In addition, Podolyak mentioned Ukraine's security arrangements, stating that Kyiv must be included in some kind of security alliance, not NATO, but still needs some kind of alliance.
This statement means that Ukraine has temporarily made a concession on the NATO issue, turning instead to seek other forms of security guarantees.
Previously, when Putin met with Trump, he put forward four conditions:
ceasefire along the de facto line; ceding Donbas; not joining NATO; not allowing NATO peacekeeping forces. Now Ukraine has accepted two of them.
However, even if Ukraine makes concessions on freezing the front lines and delaying its accession to NATO, the prospects for Russia-Ukraine negotiations remain complex.
Putin insists that the Ukrainian army must withdraw from Donbas and opposes any Western country sending ground forces to Ukraine, while Kyiv remains firm on these points, refusing to give up control over Donetsk, and actively pushing for talks with more than ten countries on the deployment of security forces.
Moscow has repeatedly warned that if France or Poland send troops into Ukraine, it will be seen as direct NATO involvement, with unpredictable consequences.
This means that even if some issues can be resolved in the short term, there are still major obstacles to long-term reconciliation, and the situation between Russia and Ukraine remains full of uncertainty.
